Washington Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Program
Mission: We cultivate leaders in agriculture, forestry and natural resources who communicate, collaborate, inspire and serve.
Vision: To positively impact and enrich lives and communities in Washington State and throughout the world with leading edge solutions for challenges faced by Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources.
WHY SUPPORT THE PROGRAM?
Leadership is vital to having healthy farms, forests, and rural communities. How will we meet and lead such issues as globalization of markets, genetically modified plants, green certification, governmental regulations, industry consolidation, and shrinking profits in a society that is becoming increasingly urbanized? Who will lead the science, social, and political processes that will maintain the vitality of our industries and communities? It makes sense to prepare leaders with the knowledge and skills to proactively lead and shape our destiny. The leaders we develop in the present will influence the plans and actions taken in the future.
Strong leadership is required. The Washington Agriculture and Forestry Leadership Program develops leaders who have excellent communication skills, the ability to collaborate, the vision to see the big picture, the desire to seek common solutions, the understanding of policy development, the ability to work with legislators and members of Congress, the knowledge of social issues impacting communities, an understanding of environmental and water issues, access to a network of knowledgeable people representing a broad array of organizations and interests, and a worldview of trade and foreign governments.
Graduates of the program have proven very effective in their leadership roles. They are serving the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industries in leadership positions at the local, regional, state, and national levels. In addition, they are serving in the state legislature, on county commissions, on economic development councils, school boards, and on advisory committees to colleges and universities.
Founded in 1977, the Leadership Program is an 18-month, 59-day intense experience for 24 participants in each leadership class. Universities and businesses across the state provide in-kind facilities and faculty support to assure a world-class training experience. Over 700 investors composed of individuals and businesses provide the financial resources to plan and conduct twelve 3-day statewide leadership development seminars, one 7-day national leadership development seminar, and one 2-week international leadership development seminar.
